On average, Jasper County experiences 25 severe weather watches each year, 17 of which are for severe thunderstorms and 8 are for tornado watches. That's why this week is especially important. Jasper County Emergency Management Director Kieth Stammer tells News Talk KZRG Severe Weather Preparedness week is about preparing for all types of severe weather.
"We know first hand from 2011 how devestating a particular weather event can be, but that's not the only event that we watch after. We also have situations with flooding, and then we move into the summer time with droughts, fires, and it's all weather related.
Missouri's statewide tornado drill will be Thursday, March 6th at 1 p.m. Stammer says a couple of ways to stay safe is to have a safety kit, and a plan of action. You can find more information at FEMA.gov, weather.gov/springfield, and Joplinmo.org.
