A Joplin inmate stabbed himself in the throat with a pencil Thursday. Corporal Chuck Niess of the Joplin Police Department says it sounds worse than it actually was:
"He took a pencil - they're allowed to have short pencils to write letters - and stuck it through the skin on his neck, in most likely what was an attempt to get out of jail. He was treated by a medic and transported to a local medical facility, and will be returned to jail."
The inmate's name hasn't been released, but he's expected to make a full recovery.
