State agriculture officials say about 1,450 pounds of possibly contaminated beef and pork products have been returned to a southwest Missouri processor. Andy Cloud of Cloud's Meats of Carthage says they voluntarily recalled the meat after routine testing detected E. coli in samples last month.
"A company brought us their livestock, we processed it for them and returned it to them. The same day it was picked up, we were notified of a positive test and we got it back. The meat never went into commerce."
Cloud adds that the products were not distributed for retail sale.
"It was never for sale, and has no association with any of the meat we sell in our retail stores. We're looking at this as a success story, as everyone worked together and our inspection program worked, our tracking program worked, and we stopped it from getting out to the public."
Missouri's Agriculture Department says the recalled products were marked with the code "318" and labeled with Clouds Meats Inc. or Cloud's Smoked Meats. Recalled items included 1,052 pounds of ground beef, 158 pounds of pork sausage, 152 pounds of ground pork, and 96 pounds of Tenderized Minute Steak and Tenderized Round Steak.
