Rt 66 Interest Means Growth for Galena

It's a great time to be living in Galena. The town of 3,000 has had a resurgence over the past decade; bringing in new businesses, more jobs, and tourists from all over the world to the historic Route 66. Mayor Dale Oglesby told News Talk KZRG that he's never remembered the city thriving more than it is now.

"There's just opportunity everywhere. The streetscape project on Main Street, people are remodeling buildings, opening restaurants and coffee shops, all the tourists... it's just an exciting time to be living here."

Oglesby says they haven't seen this much growth since the mines were closed in the 1970's. Part of that may be due to this summer's Route 66 Festival, to be held in Joplin. Oglesby tells News Talk KZRG they're very excited to work with Joplin's planning committee to coordinate the event and can't wait to show off Kansas' part of the historic highway.

"We'll be operating shuttles and showing them the Kansas portions of the Route. We're excited to show off this part of the Four States."

Oglesby says they'll have plenty of food, music and a lot of other surprises planned.
