The McDonald County Sheriff's Department wants to warn you of a possible phone scam. A local grandmother was scammed out of nearly $1,000 after receiving a call saying her granddaughter was in some sort of trouble after getting into a car accident and in order to get out of jail, she needed to wire the cash. After the scammer called again, the woman became suspicious and called local law enforcement. Sheriff Mike Hall offers some tips to keep you from becoming a victim.
"If they have any type of accent, or they're calling saying someone's hurt, just ask them where they're from. And then find the number for your local police department and give them a call."
Another way to scare them off is to keep asking questions so they'll eventually hang up. If you receive one of these calls, report it to your local police department.
