MO Hwy Patrol Reports Holiday Weekend Traffic Numbers

It was a deadly holiday weekend on the roads across the state of Missouri. The Highway Patrol is reporting eight people died in traffic accidents, compared to just six last year. Sgt. Mike Watson says southwest Missouri was fortunate to not have any fatalities this year. He breaks down Missouri's traffic accident numbers to News Talk KZRG:

"We investigated 299 crashes, and that included 140 injuries. That's a little lower than the number of crashes last year."

The good news is fewer impaired drivers were on the road in Missouri this holiday weekend. 14 DUI arrests were made in southwest Missouri over the Thanksgiving weekend compared to 16 last year. Sgt. Mike Watson with the Highway Patrol tells News Talk KZRG they attribute the lower numbers to a couple of enforcement programs.

"Our CARE (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) projects, which sees us put as many troopers as possible on the roads during a weekend. We also have a program that places a trooper every 20 miles on the interstate."

Those DUI's were made between 6 p.m Wednesday through Midnight Monday morning.
